Neurosurgeons specialize in surgical diseases of the brain, skull, spine, spinal cord and peripheral nerves.
Brain Surgeries
Surgeries such as brain tumors, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebrovascular diseases and aneurysms, head trauma and brain abscesses are usually performed by opening the skull with a method called craniotomy and accessing the pathology in the brain tissue. These operations are usually performed under general anesthesia. A surgical microscope is used in many surgeries. In this way, a much more detailed view of the operated area can be obtained with microsurgical methods. In hydrocephalus, excess fluid has accumulated in the brain. This fluid can be transferred from the brain to a cavity of the body such as the abdomen by placing a shunt. In movement disorders such as Parkinson’s, a “Deep Brain Stimulation” can be done. This surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia.
Pediatric Brain Surgery
Pediatric neurosurgery deals with the diagnosis and treatment of neurosurgical diseases in children. These include congenital anomalies, spine and spinal cord and lumbar problems, tethered spinal cord syndrome, split spinal cord and skull deformities. Pediatric brain tumors are also among the topics of pediatric neurosurgery. In diseases such as hydrocephalus, excess fluid accumulated in the brain can be transferred from the brain to a cavity of the body such as the abdomen by placing a shunt. Almost all operations are performed under general anesthesia.
