The decision to perform the surgery under general or local anesthesia depends on the anatomical region to be operated on, the technique of the surgery, the duration of the surgery, the presence of comorbidities and the psychological state of the patient. Although general anesthesia is mostly used in spine surgery, local anesthesia can be used in some operations and procedures. Spinal Cord Stimulation, facet joint and epidural injections and herniated disc surgeries are examples of surgeries where local anesthesia is used. Peripheral nerve surgeries such as median nerve compression in the wrist, known as carpal tunnel syndrome, can also be performed under local anesthesia.
