Operations in neurosurgery can be performed under both general and local anesthesia. The decision to perform the surgery under general or local anesthesia depends on the anatomical location where the surgery will be performed, the technique of the surgery, the duration of the surgery, the additional diseases and the psychological state of the patient.
The majority of operations in neurosurgery are performed under general anesthesia. In neurosurgery, local anesthesia can be used in the treatment of movement disorders such as Parkinson’s dystonia and essential tremor for application of deep brain stimulation (DBS, Deep Brain Stimulation), in the treatment of some tumors in the scalp and bone, in stereotaxic biopsy, and in some cases in brain tumor surgery. It can be very useful to keep better visualition of the patient’s motor functions, vital functions and functions in awake patients.
